Maintaining Your Turf

Landin Terry, who’s a co-steward of LBK TURF GUYS, and a large mover in the local Turf Industry has joined us today on Let’s Talk Turf, and the topic we are covering is maintaining turf, from a residential and home-owner perspective.

“When it comes to maintaining your turf, it’s very important to prioritize a routine. That can range from all the way from deep cleanings, to light cleanings… You can do it monthly! You can do it quarterly! You can do it bi-annually, or you can even do it once a year at certain times depending on usage and the traffic.

With the range of options and depth of cleanings available an easy and accessible way to keep your turf cleaned starts with some very simple steps: blowing, and brushing.”

Landin has a great point- not only is maintaining your turf easy, it’s also doable from a homeowner standpoint, and it can save you a lot of hassle in the long run.

Tools needed: A Blower, and a Power Brush (aka turf power broom). Both of these are available to retail customers from a variety of places and have a variety of options such as electric, gas, and even corded in some instances. Especially if you plan on maintaining your turf yourself, we recommend purchasing an affordable, yet quality set of tools to make sure you don’t have to worry about their utility and longevity in the future.

A basic light cleaning takes a surprisingly small amount of time, and it goes a long way. All you need to do is 2-3 times a month, head outside and use your blower to “dust off” your turf.. It should only take about 5 minutes per yard- That’s it!

What this does is it removes the dirt and dust that would eventually settle into the turf and form a “concrete” of sorts. It takes time for enough external dust to settle onto turf, and repeated cycles of rain for this to happen, but by regularly blowing off your turf with a blower you can prevent future issues with just a few minutes of maintenance, a few times per month.

Now lets talk about a household medium cleaning- this is where the power brush comes in.

Over periods of time, particularly in high traffic areas, the infill of the turf can begin to wear down and become displaced. More often than not, the infill becomes displaced to other parts of the turf, this can be remedied with a power brush. By brushing up the fibers and installing new infill into the low areas, and brushing out the infill/dust/debris in the high areas you can clean the turf, and finish off with using your blower to get rid of the residual dust. For most residential lawns and backyards you could expect to spend from 5 to 30 minutes brushing, blowing, and removing debris and garbage.

A fantastic additional step that can be considered is spraying for weeds and plucking out the occasional weed (that although rare, can happen with Turf), particularly around the edging. Areas where turf comes in contact with edging, such as concrete ribbons, or alternative edging are the areas where turf is most susceptible to weeds, dirt and other issues commonly associated with improper installations or improperly maintained turf.

When you enter the theater of deep/heavy cleanings of turf, we start to gear a bit towards the commercial side of things. If you are experiencing severe issues with your turf or feel like cleaning your turf isn’t something you can handle, feel free to reach out to a turf professional such as LBK TURF GUYS!

A Heavy cleaning may involve operating larger machinery and using chemicals such as deodorizers, but don’t be afraid of attempting to use deodorizers such as deodorizing turf infill and using your turf power broom to push the infill into the turf in order to refresh your backyard and don’t forget to finish the job by giving it a quick dust off with your blower!
