Combining Artificial Turf with Stamped Concrete for West Texas Backyards

The most common version of this project goes wrong the same way every time.

A homeowner gets a quote from a concrete contractor for a stamped patio. Then they get a separate quote from a turf installer for the yard. Both contractors do good work in their own scope. But nobody planned what happens at the line where the stamped concrete ends and the turf begins, the height relationship, the expansion joint, the edging. So one crew finishes and the other crew arrives and figures it out on the spot. The result is a joint that looks improvised, because it was.

We do the concrete and the turf. Both scopes, one team, one design conversation before either scope starts. That is what makes the difference between a backyard that looks like a finished outdoor room and one that looks like two separate contractors who almost coordinated.

Why Both Trades Need to Be in the Same Conversation

Stamped concrete and artificial turf affect each other’s installation requirements in ways that only surface when someone is responsible for both.

 

Grade and drainage

Concrete needs to slope away from structures,  typically a quarter inch per foot toward a drain or a permeable area. Turf on a True Drain base also needs positive drainage grade. When these two surfaces meet, the grade at the joint determines whether water flows across the concrete, through the turf, and out of the yard, or whether it pools at the line between them. A concrete contractor grading for concrete drainage and a turf installer grading for turf drainage, working from the same yard without a shared plan, frequently create a low point at the joint. That low point collects every rain event.

 

Height alignment

The turf surface needs to sit flush with the adjacent concrete surface. Not a quarter inch high. Not a quarter inch low. Flush. A high turf edge creates a trip hazard and a visible ridge that catches the eye from any viewing angle. A low turf edge creates a gap at the joint where debris and haboob dust collect continuously.

Getting that height right requires knowing the finished concrete thickness, the base depth under the turf, and the turf product pile height, all before the first concrete form goes up. When we pour the concrete and install the turf, those numbers are planned together. When two separate contractors are involved, they are usually figured out during installation, which is too late.

 

The expansion joint detail

Stamped concrete expands and contracts with temperature. Lubbock’s temperature range, summer highs above 100°F and winter lows below freezing,  puts more thermal stress on concrete than most other Texas markets. A concrete slab without proper expansion joints cracks. A concrete slab with expansion joints that were not designed with the turf joint in mind creates a gap at the turf edge that opens and closes with the seasons, working loose whatever edging was set against it.

Stamped Concrete in Lubbock: What West Texas Conditions Change

Stamped concrete is installed and performing in most of the country without the considerations that Lubbock adds. A few of those considerations change the pattern and color choices significantly.

 

Heat absorption and surface temperature

Dark stamped concrete, deep charcoal, rich brown, dark slate tones, looks excellent in a showroom and in photos taken in moderate afternoon light. In Lubbock in July, those same surfaces absorb heat all day and hold it into the evening. A dark stamped concrete patio that receives afternoon sun can hit surface temperatures that are genuinely uncomfortable for bare feet and dangerous for dogs within a few minutes.

Lighter base tones with accent coloring,  warm beige, light sand, cream with a contrasting release agent,  deliver the visual depth that makes stamped concrete look premium while keeping surface temperatures significantly lower. This is not a compromise on aesthetics. The travertine and ashlar slate patterns in mid-range tones consistently produce the strongest visual results in Lubbock backyard designs, and they hold up to the climate better than their darker alternatives.

 

Haboob dust and sealer maintenance

Deeply textured stamped patterns, cobblestone, irregular flagstone, heavy brick, trap haboob dust in their texture grooves. After a significant dust event, those deep patterns require more effort to clean than a smoother surface. The sealer applied to stamped concrete both protects the surface and provides the finish sheen that makes it look premium. In Lubbock’s UV intensity, sealer degrades faster than in more temperate markets. Resealing every two years rather than the standard three-year recommendation is the right schedule here.

This is not a reason to avoid stamped concrete. It is a reason to choose patterns with more moderate texture depth and to factor resealing into the long-term maintenance plan.

 

Caliche as a concrete subgrade

Here is one place where Lubbock’s caliche actually works in your favor. Caliche is a very stable subgrade for concrete. It does not shift, settle, or compress under load the way loose fill soils do. Concrete poured over a properly prepared caliche base holds its grade and surface flatness over time better than concrete in markets with sandy or clay-heavy native soil. We still require proper subgrade prep,  cleaning the surface, establishing the correct depth for the slab thickness, and confirming grade before forming, but caliche is a structural asset for concrete rather than a liability.

The travertine look is the most requested pattern in Lubbock right now, and it earns that popularity. The natural lighter tones keep surface temperatures manageable, the relatively smooth face sheds haboob dust easily, and the aesthetic reads as elevated and finished in a way that suits both the West Texas landscape and the outdoor living designs homeowners are building. When paired with Everglade Fescue Light as the turf zone, the color contrast between the warm concrete tones and the green turf is exactly the visual people are working toward.

 

The Joint: How the Concrete and Turf Edge Actually Work Together

The joint between stamped concrete and turf is not one detail. It is several decisions that need to be made together.

 

The concrete ribbon approach

On most LBK combined projects, the turf edge that meets the stamped concrete uses the same concrete ribbon system we use for putting greens. A poured ribbon, reinforced with rebar, runs along the full length of the joint. The ribbon is formed and finished at the correct height to sit flush with both the stamped concrete face and the turf surface. The turf is then secured against the ribbon face, creating a joint that does not move, does not gap, and does not require the periodic maintenance that metal edging or bender board at a concrete joint demands.

 

When PFS Board is used instead

For turf edges that meet concrete on a secondary boundary, the back fence side, the zone between the turf and a wall rather than a poured slab ,PFS Board composite edging is the right specification. PFS Board is not appropriate as the primary joint at a large stamped concrete patio edge because it cannot be formed to the exact height relationship that a poured ribbon achieves. But for the perimeter boundary work around the turf zone, PFS Board mechanically anchored is what holds the system in place through Lubbock wind and temperature cycling.

 

The height calculation that has to happen before forming

The finished turf surface height equals: base depth plus turf pile height. The finished concrete surface height equals: slab thickness at the joint edge. Both need to be calculated before the concrete forms go up. If the concrete is poured first at a height that does not account for the turf system beside it, the turf installer is working to hit a number that was set without them. That is where the joint problem starts. We run the numbers before we form a single board.

The most popular configuration right now in Lubbock residential projects is the patio with turf yard, a stamped concrete entertaining area extending from the back door, then a clean edge transition to a turf yard covering the remainder of the space to the fence. It is visually the most impactful layout for a mid size Lubbock backyard because the contrast between the hardscape zone and the green zone reads immediately as a designed outdoor room rather than a functional yard.

 

Drainage: The Part Nobody Talks About Until It Fails

A combined concrete and turf yard has two drainage systems that need to work together. The concrete drains via slope, water moves across the surface and off the edge. The turf drains via permeability, water moves through the backing and into the True Drain base below.

The problem occurs when the two surfaces meet at a low point. If the concrete grade and the turf grade both slope toward the joint rather than away from it, every rain event sends water from both surfaces into the same spot,  which is also the joint where the edging is most exposed. That accumulation is what works the joint apart over time and saturates the turf edge zone after every storm.

The right design creates a drainage path that moves water from the concrete across the surface to a perimeter drain or scupper, and from the turf down through the base to the same drainage outlet. When we design both scopes together, that drainage path is part of the site plan before any concrete is poured or any excavation begins.

 

What to Ask Any Contractor Before You Sign Two Separate Quotes

If you are talking to a concrete contractor and a turf installer separately, these are the questions that reveal whether the joint will come out right.

 

  • What is the finished surface height of the concrete slab at the turf edge? If the concrete contractor cannot give you a specific number, they have not planned for the joint.
  • What is the finished turf surface height above the existing grade? If the turf installer says they will figure it out after the concrete is done, they are planning to adapt, not to design.
  • Where will the expansion joint be in the concrete, and how does it relate to the turf edge? A concrete contractor who has not thought about this has not considered the turf side of the project.
  • Who is responsible for the edging at the joint,  the concrete contractor or the turf installer? If the answer is ‘the other guy,’ nobody is responsible.

 

The honest answer is that two separate contractors can do this well,  but only if they talk to each other before either scope begins, and only if someone is explicitly coordinating the joint. In most residential projects, that coordination does not happen unless one company is doing both.
